Here’s how I make my newborn sessions quick + painless:
-
🍃I’m fast! I am not a methodic, slow moving lady at sessions. I’m calm but fast. This keeps things fun and interesting.
-
🍃I come with a flexible plan- our goal is to get older kiddo shots done first since the newness of my arrival eventually wears off so I like to take advantage of curious energy.
-
🍃I adjust my personality for each kiddo. A quieter kiddo will get a slightly different experience with me than a busier kiddo.
-
🍃nothing anyone can do at the session will surprise me: accidental falls, angry outbursts at baby, angry outbursts at mom or dad, extreme wrestling matches, a full tour of every toy in every child’s room, up the back blowouts, milk leaks, colic, potentially suffocating snuggling lol, shooting most of the session with a toddler on my hip, or a cat on my leg, or a dog humping my leg - I’ve literally seen it all!

You know something I used to feel insecure about?

You know something I used to feel insecure about? I didn’t consider myself… creative.

I think more than I’m creative, I’m an extremely hard worker. My mind says, “did you become a good photographer because you are a creative person or because you took 70,000 photos the first year you had your camera?” And then I’d judge myself. Or feel like a fraud.

Am I someone who sees the world differently than others or am I someone who stubbornly will not give up until I’m good at shit? Are they same? …maybe?

I’m not sure anyone really knows. I have a lot of ideas- I love the way light catches on the edges of leaves, the rise and fall of beautiful music can leave me breathless, I’ll read a really well written poem 50 times. Am I creative? Or are we all and the difference in being creative and becoming A creative is just work?

A while back, I decided I as tired of judging myself about it. I decided to like my own work. To love my edits. I know this is something a lot of photographers struggle with and it makes them feel like imposters.

My advice to you is to stop judging. Let all your beautiful creations just… be. Keep making things that bring YOU joy.
