Pre panini, I worked on this session as part of a course I released about family photography!

I’ve since split this course up so the behind the scenes content + the editing videos are one thing, the marketing piece is another. I did this because I’ve learned that family photographers are in so many different places in their businesses and creative expression.

I’ll be releasing that smaller segment of behind the scenes + editing soon! Then I plan to release a new one every quarter.

2021 solidified two things for me: 1. I love teaching! 2. I need more of my evening time that I’m often at sessions back now that my girls are older (I never would’ve guessed that- I thought I’d have MORE free time as my kiddos got older but session times often collide with sports practice and that precious time that middle schoolers want to talk- which in my family ALSO seems to coincide with session start time).

It feels good to take steps in this direction. I still love love shooting and won’t probably ever stop. But it can no longer be the bulk of my business income staring in 2023.

I’m considering this post the bookend to my small rant against trying to chase what other photographers are doing on this app.

Somewhere along the line, family photographers got into a bit of a group think. We started lining up behind each other to become one big mass of a very similar business presence.

Being in this line may feel very safe. But it could be making you invisible. If you are posting your images on IG, throwing a reel out here and there and emailing your list sporadically, you are blending in within this marketing space. You are easy to scroll past.

A big break through for me was realizing how many clients I needed to hit my income goal. It wasn’t THAT many people and after a few years of strategic marketing, I’m able to book my year to the number of sessions I want. So, I’m no longer in growth mode.

But if you are still in growth mode, figure out how many people you need to hire you to meet your income goal (it’s likely not a massive number).

Then step out of line. Differentiate your marketing. Don’t chase what everyone else is doing.

Don’t fit in. Try new things. Fail. Get up. Keep not fitting in. Keep showing up as your unique self.
