First- this gorgeous mama + this light = šŸ˜ annn First- this gorgeous mama + this light = šŸ˜ annnnnnnd it’s tax day! Yay.
-
Prior to 2018, I was a weird money hoarder. About half my income came in through PayPal and the other half through stripe. Why did I want it that way? I didn’t. I simply had set it up that way and left it for years.
-
When taxes came due, I would just pull from the hoarding pile. So I never *didn’t* have the money but I also didn’t know anything about my money- how much I really had, how much I should save. The whole thing made me nervous so I just hoarded it. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø
-
The truth was I was scared of actually *knowing*. If I knew how much money I had (or didn’t have) that might mean something negative about me as a human.
-
I knew this was a sticky spot in my business, so on my long drives to the mountains, started binging money books + podcasts. I learned that the only way to feel in control of my money was to actually know what was going on intimately.
-
If this tax day has arrived and you don’t feel prepared- you didn’t have enough saved or you are scared of looking at your bank accounts- I feel you.
-
Now a days, I have a date with my money on the 5th and 25th of every month. I add up my income and move it into appropriate accounts. I try to make it all extremely unemotional- that’s on undoing years of crap money stories. Those stories are powerful and worth examining.
-
I’m doing a few money related polls in my stories- I’d love your input!
Let’s talk about confidence in marketing. - A lo Let’s talk about confidence in marketing.
-
A lot of family photographers have lost their way when it comes to marketing. They are:
-
1. Afraid to show up the way they want to because they fear judgement.
-
2. They are afraid to talk about their sessions bc they don’t want to come off as pushy or salesy.
-
3. They are throwing images up on social media randomly or choosing images for how they look on the grid instead of part of a marketing plan they’ve crafted towards booking sessions.
-
4. They are posting work for the approval of OTHER photographers NOT to book potential clients.
-
5. They are measuring their worth on likes, shares and features instead of filling up their calendar with clients.
-
6. They are completely ignoring happy past clients and chasing new follows instead.
-
This is not anyone’s fault- it’s a very confusing thing to be an artist & a business owner. Art and artistry matters. But if you are trying to run a successful business- booking clients has to matter too.
-
For the past few months, I’ve been on a quest to try to help family photographers find a happy medium. I think coming up with a seasonal marketing plan is the answer.
-
I’ve been working on some resources directly tied to helping family photographers feel confident with their messaging when they are marketing. I’ll be chatting more about these things over the next few weeks!
-
If you want to take a small but mighty step towards confidence-make a list of the things you’ve told yourself about posting images here on IG and what it means about you. Examine those things. Are they even true?
-
If you post and no one comments, does it really mean anything about your business? If you talk about upcoming sessions, are you being pushy? Is your voice really as annoying as you think it is?(answer: NO) — did you know that ā€œhaving an annoying voiceā€ was the number one reason people don’t talk to their audience in stories when I did I poll?
-
Think about other little untruths that are holding you back from building the business you want. Dismantle them.
-
You belong here. You are free to market. This app does not decide if you are ā€œgoodā€. No one else on this app is YOU. Take up space.

Are you constantly comparing your work to others o Are you constantly comparing your work to others on this app and thus feeling like shit everyday? It’s a super fun cycle, eh?! There is no perfect way to remove yourself from this super fun spin cycle but it is possible for comparison to take a back seat.
-
I thought I’d share a few things that have helped me:
-
1. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. When I first started in photography, I would get so caught in the fact that my work did not look like someone else’s and forgot to notice the progress I was making an artist.
-
2. What’s done is done. Let go of the past. The way you felt about others and your own work isn’t who you are becoming. Don’t dwell there.
-
3. Remember why you started. Why did you become a photographer in the first place? It likely wasn’t to become the best photographer in the world with 100,000 Instagram followers. Hold tight to your roots.
-
4. Nothing worth having comes easy. If you want to feel good about your art and support others in their journey as well, you are going to have to continue working on your mindset because growing is magical and scary too.
-
This Sunday, I’ll be chatting in-depth about this topic- you can find the link in my profile. Come say hi! šŸ’•

-
I won’t lie- I was nervous all morning before the call. But then I quickly forgot about any nerves and got into the flow.
-
It would’ve have been a lot easier to not create that group. I wouldn’t have had to wake up an hour before my alarm to triple check my notes, or kick my kid out her room so I could have a quiet place or test all my audio or video stuff. But I smashed, tripped and slide head first through multiple fear blocks to build this program.
-
Is there something out in front of you, just beyond a fear block, that you really want? When you decide to do it anyway, it’s not gonna look like walking up, opening the door and walking through.
-
It’s gonna look like running full speed, skidding to a stop and retreating with your head down. Then turning around and running at it again only to trip and fall on the other side. BUT! You made it!! It’s all about dusting off your knees and walking toward the next dream.
-
Social media is a trap of truth. Most things don’t come easily to most people. Most people aren’t happy all the time, or pretty all the time or on spectacular adventures all the time. It’s hard work and skinned knees behind ALL of it. I told my girls this morning that I was nervous of my call. They hugged me and told me I would do great. When I got off the call they were waiting at the door with a little handful of Easter candy as a ā€œcelebrationā€.
-
Even though is hard to have them home 100% of the time- I love that they really get to see me as a creative female entrepreneur work through things and come out the other side ā¤ļø
